The Abode of The Message
The Abode of the Message is a Sufi community, retreat and conference center, cradled in the Taconic-Berkshire Mountains of Upstate New York, owned and operated since 1975 by The Sufi Order of North America, which was founded by Hazrat Inayat Khan, a Sufi from India, in the early 1900's. Hazrat Inayat Khan's son and successor, Pir Vilayat Khan founded The Abode of the Message community and his grandson, Pir Zia Inayat Khan currently resides at The Abode of the Message.
Individuals and groups are welcome to discover the beauty and serenity, an easy three hour drive from New York City or Boston and just forty-five minutes from the Albany airport.
The Columbia County mountain landscape frames the Abode's 400 acres, and offers individuals and groups beauty and sanctuary for the purposes of residence, study, and presentation of programs. Our presenters come from around North America and Internationally and the main focus is on the Sufi Path. The programs also include a rich array of the world's great religious traditions and we welcome seekers and guests who feel the call, and sense the need for a deep study of the human experience. This is reflected in a quote from Hazrat Inayat Khan, "There is one Holy Book, the sacred manuscript of nature, the only scripture which can enlighten the reader."
Our complex of historic Shaker buildings includes rooms for short term rental, a hall for gatherings of up to sixty participants, and a secluded campground conference center capable of hosting up to two hundred guests in tents, huts, and cabins. Groups who rent our facilities may elect for total self-structuring concerning use of the facility or avail themselves of our experienced staff of cooks and hosts.
